We were on our way when I glanced over at Trace. “Why are you doing this?”

He shrugged. His hands gripped the steering wheel. He’d insisted we take his truck. “You might need me.”

“You don’t even like Atticus.” I shouldn’t snap at him, but I was worried. I hadn’t wanted to take time to argue about whether Trace was coming or not.

“I’ve only met him once. Who knows? I might like him if I get to know him.” He kept his eyes on the road, staring straight ahead. Then he gave me a quick glance. “I don’t want you going there alone,” he finally admitted.

My throat felt tight. “Thanks.”

The police were there when we arrived, thank God. But it also meant we couldn’t get through. I explained who we were to the patrol office guarding the hallway, and he talked into his walkie-talkie for a minute before nodding for us to go up.

As soon as I entered the apartment, I wanted to rush over to Atticus to make sure he was okay. But Detective Mason was right there and too perceptive.

“Everything okay?” I asked, watching Atticus. His eyes were puffy, like he’d been crying. I had an urge to throw everyone out so I could hold him and find out who hurt him.

He nodded. “This is so stupid. I’m sorry.”

Maddie rushed into the apartment out of breath. “Oh my God, Attie, are you okay?” He hugged him tight, and I tried to push my jealous feelings away. I knew there wasn’t anything between Attie and his former roommate, but I wanted to be able to do that. Hug Atticus and make sure he was okay. And a part of me wanted to let everyone know he was mine. But he wasn’t. Not really.

The small apartment was full of people. Several officers, a woman I didn’t recognize, Ben, and Maddie. I knew Reid and Gabriel weren’t far behind. And for some odd reason, Cissy was there. She glanced over at me and tilted her head like she couldn’t figure out why I was there. I wanted to tell her the feeling was mutual.

“Can we clear the room, please?” Detective Mason said in a booming voice that got everyone’s attention.

“Who’s that?” Trace asked in a low voice.

“He’s the detective on the stalker case. Hasn’t he interviewed you yet?”

“Nope. I did talk to her.” He nodded toward the woman I’d noticed earlier. “Am I a suspect?”

“I think everyone’s a suspect. I’m sure he’ll get to you.”

“Something to look forward to,” he said dryly.

The detective had the room almost cleared in a matter of minutes. I hoped he wouldn’t make us leave. He walked up to Trace and me and cocked his head. “Nice to see you again, Professor Hamlin. Is there a reason you’re here?”

Fuck. Fuckity. Fuck. “Atticus called me. He heard someone in the apartment. I told him to call the police.”

He nodded, not surprised. Of course, Atticus had already told him. Good thing I stuck to the truth.

“And you?” He crossed those massive arms and stared at Trace.
